Jack and Bore

Horizontal Auger Boring

Horizontal Auger Boring (Jack & Bore) provides a safe, accurate, and slurry-free method for installing large-diameter casing and carrier pipe while minimizing surface disruption. The method is ideal for crossings beneath roadways, railroads, waterways, buildings, and other areas where conventional open-cut excavation is impractical or disruptive.

For installations requiring precise line and grade, the process begins with our laser-guided pilot bore system. The pilot bore establishes an accurate path for the crossing, allowing the subsequent casing installation to maintain the required alignment and elevation throughout the bore.

Once the pilot is completed, steel casing is advanced using one of our Jack & Bore machines. As the casing is hydraulically jacked forward, rotating augers excavate and remove material from inside the casing. After the casing reaches the receiving side, the specified carrier pipe or utility can be installed through the completed casing.

With multiple Jack & Bore systems and pilot boring capabilities, we can accommodate a wide range of casing diameters, crossing lengths, and project requirements while providing a controlled and efficient trenchless installation.

Advantages of Horizontal Auger Boring

  • Minimal surface disruption — Installation is completed underground without excavating the length of the crossing.
  • Reduced traffic impacts — Roadways can often remain operational throughout construction, minimizing lane closures and detours.
  • Precise line and grade — Laser-guided pilot boring provides the accuracy required for gravity sewer, drainage, and other grade-critical installations.
  • Slurry-free operation — Augers mechanically excavate and remove material without relying on a drilling-fluid circulation system.
  • Large-diameter capability — Well suited for large steel casing and carrier pipe installations.
  • Versatile crossing applications — Effective beneath highways, railroads, waterways, intersections, buildings, and other critical infrastructure.
  • Cost-effective trenchless solution — Eliminates extensive excavation, restoration, and surface reconstruction associated with conventional open-cut installation.
